Game of Thrones - Telltale Game - Game Review

Hey there! Are you a fan of George R.R Martin’s a Song of Ice and Fire book series, and more importantly its television adaptation the Game of Thrones series? Are the Starks your favourite characters alongside Daenerys Targaryen? Well boy! Do I have a game for you! Game of Thrones – A Telltale Game Series is an adaptation of the adaptation television series and even provides voice acting from some of it’s’ cast.

With a pastiche Stark family who get to meet all your favourite “good” and “bad” characters from the smash-hit television series.  House Forrester of Ironrath, loyal banner men to the Starks with a long time rivalry with House Whitehill, whom in return are loyal to the House Boltons.

1st there is Gared Tuttle, the honour bound squire of the lord of House Forrester, who takes the black to fulfil an oath. (Jon Snow) You then have the Forrester Lady who acts as handmaiden in King’s Landing, who must play the game of thrones with the Tyrells and the Lannisters (Sansa Stark). Rodrik Forrester is the noble warrior and eldest son of the family (Robb Stark) who must lead his people against their long time enemy and last but not least; Asher Forrester is the exiled son who must return from Essos to save his family. The game also introduces a character who’s such a powerful warg, it begs to question why the three-eyed raven would ever be interested in Brandon Stark. ;)

"We couldn't afford the Starks, so here's our original characters!"

Despite all of this, I was invested in the story and how I could have effect on the story from start to end, the game is episodic with 6 episodes. Each episode is over hour and half content of choices ranging from 2 to 4 choices giving you to select whom you’ll accompany, whom you promote, who will you let die, who will you kill and etc.

But despite this given freedom of choices, the story is still scripted to a linear path where each character, regardless of their choices will always end up in the same position as any other player would, it simply is the circumstances you’re met with that truly alters the scenarios and because of this, there is some replay value found. The game in fact demonstrates the percentage of the game’s population whom made the same decision as you, and it can be funny when you’re one of the few 2 to 10% to make decision X or Y.

I would go as far as to say you don’t even necessarily need to be a fan of neither the books or the television series the game has been adapted from, the game gives a clear introduction to all characters, there is a codex and the plot in itself is straightforward good guys having a tough situation case. The game offers you enough likeable characters to root for, despicable villains, cool choreography and cinematic cut scenes full of action, adventure and drama. For those familiar with Game of Thrones, you all know there is those big twists during the second last episode of a season, the game also offers its big twist, but I loved the video game adaptation of this, because I could choose the outcome of this major shock and that’s when you know you’re doing Game of Thrones right.

The game played by reviewer was on Playstation 4.

Asher Forrester was easily my favourite character of the bunch.
